Zvolen Castle was built in 1370-1380.
In 1500, the outer fortifications with four round bastions and the entrance gate were completed.
In the 16th century, due to the advance of the Turks, it was decided to further strengthen the castle, and two more floors with loopholes were added. Corner oriel towers were also built.
In 1590, a powerful western artillery bastion was added.
From 1956 to 1970, major restoration work was carried out at the castle.
Today, it houses the exhibition halls of the Slovak National Gallery.
