Chile 2023

Day 10: October 11

Chaitén Volcano

Chile 2023

Itinerary

Today we are hiking to Chaitén Volcano.
It is interesting because the last eruption was in 2008.

During this eruption, clouds of gases with a temperature of 300°C-700°C moved at a speed of 100 km/h.

The surrounding trees were damaged by these gases, leaving only dead trunks behind.

There is a lot of obsidian here.

Serzhyk collected a whole pile of stones of different sizes.

Some obsidians are transparent, some are matte.

Pieces of pure obsidian. Pebbles of various shapes.

Trail to the volcano. Almost the entire time was a very steep uphill climb. We walked as slowly as possible. The ascent took almost 3 hours. Not easy.

At the summit there are tables where we had tea. Unfortunately, the glass insert in our thermos cracked... We shouldn’t have taken it with us on this hike.
