The castle built by Richard the Lionheart in 1196–1198 has endured a great deal throughout its history. It belonged at times to the English, at times to the French, and was also a residence for the exiled King of Scotland. And in 1599, King Henry IV even ordered it to be demolished as unnecessary. However, the castle was not completely destroyed... In 1611, the demolition work on the castle was stopped. But the castle was declared a monument only in 1862.
We arrived at the fortress rather late, and did not get into the inner courtyard — the entrance there was closed and costs money. But we did manage to walk around the outer courtyard and admire the beautiful views opening up from the mountain.
