Day 6: September 2

The last day on Tinos, the village of Sklavochori

Itinerary

We stay at home all day until evening.
The sun is blazing. It will be unbearably hot on the beach.
We don’t have an umbrella. And in that bay where we were yesterday and where we want to go today, there is no shade.
And there are no sun loungers. Although even if there were, I doubt we would want to pay for them and lie on them.

Preparing breakfast. A local cat came to visit us.

Around four in the afternoon we head to the beach. Today the wind is noticeably stronger.
It even knocks us off our feet as we make our way down the narrow path to the bay.

The waves are bigger today too. But surprisingly, the sea is much warmer.
I like just swimming. First on my stomach, then on my back.

We climb back up our sand dune and warm ourselves on the soft warm sand.

There are far fewer people today. I had hoped to see that man with the three children again. I would have liked to watch them a little longer. As if peeking into someone else’s life.

It’s like watching a film about a life you never had and never will, but you can at least immerse yourself in it for a moment, touch it.

But they didn’t come.

Maybe I made it all up after all. Maybe he had come here with them for a couple of days too, as my dad used to do. And his wife, tired from a vacation with three children, asked him to take the kids to the beach so she could have a little time alone.

Volchiy came up with a funny way to roll down our sand hill. An amazing feeling. At first you try to control your speed, then you relax and just roll like a log, and at the end, when you stop, your brain is in shock. A pleasant feeling, a little like that edge when you start to lose consciousness — not fully conscious anymore, but not quite unconscious yet either.

For dinner, we bought baked eggplant with minced meat and a salad with large beans from the supermarket deli. Surprisingly, it was very tasty.

And after dinner, when it was already completely dark, we go for a walk through our microscopic village of Sklavochori. In the center of the village is a church with a bell tower. And all around it - an anthill of little white houses, half of which are abandoned.

I wonder what will happen to these villages in a hundred years? Will they survive?
