Day 1: June 28

Düsseldorf - Ponta Delgada - Nordeste

San Miguel 2025

Itinerary

São Miguel is the largest of the Azores islands.

Our direct flight from Düsseldorf to Ponta Delgada, the island’s capital, took almost 5 hours.

Düsseldorf at six in the morning, view from the porthole.

For the first three nights, we will be staying in the northeastern part of the island, in the small town of Nordeste.

On the way, we stopped at a supermarket.

The first trip to a supermarket in another country is one of the most interesting activities :)

The selection of fresh fish in the supermarket is impressive.

For dinner, we bought fresh sea bass, and for tomorrow, another fish with a complicated name.
We decided to experiment, even though we had our favorite sea bass :)

In the supermarket, it was something like a cafeteria. We decided to have breakfast there.
We bought a tuna steak and a signature Portuguese dish - bacalhau à brás.

Bacalhau à Brás is fried potatoes with pieces of salted cod (bacalhau) and boiled eggs. All the locals were buying this dish, so we took a chance and tried it without even knowing what it would be. Only later did we read what it was called and what we were actually eating.

It turned out to be very tasty, by the way!

We arrived at the cottage at just the right time.

It had just been finished being cleaned, so we were able to check in right away.

The year of construction is engraved above the front door - 1912.

In the house, everything is still "the same as before." The living room and kitchen.

After a short nap (we woke up at 3 a.m.) and a cup of coffee, we decided to take a walk to the coast.

Almost the entire coastline on the island consists of sheer cliffs.

Scenery. Then we climbed uphill for a long time.

Our little house has a wonderful terrace with a beautiful view of the ocean.

It’s just a pity that they’re putting a new roof on the neighboring house — we really wanted some peace and quiet, but for now it’s quite noisy.

The only hope is that tomorrow is Sunday and the builders won’t be there.
