Lanzarote 2019

Itinerary

In the morning, we gather and head on. Our new home awaits us in the small town of El Cuchillo. It’s sad to say goodbye to the boat and to this little charming town of Puerto Calero.

On the way, we stop by the vineyards. Grapes on Lanzarote are grown in an amazing way. For each vine, a hole is dug and a little wall is built — protection from the wind, and thanks to the hole, moisture is retained better.

Today we are living in a separate little house — it’s a palace compared to the boat; we have a huge kitchen here, a bedroom, and a full bathroom. But nothing can replace the amazing boat atmosphere.

After settling in, we head out for a walk. We have lots of plans. We started with a stroll along the ocean. The trail begins in the town of El Golfo. Again, there is not a soul around. It’s cloudy. But at least it’s not too hot. On one side is the ocean, on the other a practically lifeless lava plain.

We saw huge crabs. We also saw how water collects in small puddles, dries up, and turns into sea salt.

Then we stop by Los Hervideros. Here the water has carved grottoes into the rocks. I read that the water here makes an amazing sound. But when we were there, it wasn’t making any noise; probably the waves weren’t big enough.

Then we stop to take photos of the little salt plant. We never did figure out whether it was operating or not. Many of the pools are empty. No signs of life. But these snow-white heaps of salt simply fascinated me.

In the evening we go to the neighboring village on the ocean shore, La Santa. It will soon get dark. And we are climbing up the crater of a volcano. From there, a magnificent view opens up. And the ground here is bright red.

On the way home, I saw a wild rabbit. It only flashed its white paws and hid in a burrow among the lava boulders. Wolfy tried to lure it out, but to no avail.
