Lanzarote 2019

Day 1: May 28

Düsseldorf - Arrecife - Puerto Calero

Lanzarote 2019

Itinerary

Getting to Lanzarote is not a short trip, even by plane we flew for 4.5 hours. I slept through the entire flight. Behind me was practically a sleepless night because we came home late from a Rammstein concert.

We arrived in Arrecife in the morning, around 10 a.m. We managed to rent a car somehow. We didn’t have the “right” payment card to leave a deposit for the car. The card Volchy had was a debit card, but they specifically needed a credit card (only after this incident did we realize that cards are apparently different and that it matters)… Luckily, for an extra 160 euros, we could buy insurance that covered absolutely everything, and in that case no deposit was needed. And so we had our little car!

To be honest, I was terribly sleepy. Me. Volchy somehow felt pretty good. But my eyes were just closing. But alas, our first hotel was only available from 4:00 p.m. (damn, I thought when I found that out), and we had to do something. So we went to the supermarket for food.

We bought lots of things, including an empanada — that’s what they call stuffed pies in Spain (yes, we are in Spain!). Our empanada was with tuna. And so now we had to figure out where to eat it. Volchy found some beach on the map and we headed there.

A strong wind was blowing, and somehow we really didn’t feel like swimming at all. But far out at sea, someone’s head could be seen, which meant it was indeed possible to swim now. But we still couldn’t manage it. Instead, we ate our empanada sitting on volcanic rocks and listening to the sea.

I liked the empanada (I honestly didn’t believe I could like a fish pie, but it turned out to be really tasty). But Volchiy said the filling was too greasy. That was our first and last empanada for the whole trip :)

Did I mention that I was terribly sleepy? I even found a flat rock and lay down. Not for long, though. Volchiy ordered us to get going.

And so, at last, our long-awaited first place to stay — a boat! A real boat, moored to the pier in a very cute little town, Puerto Calero. The boat turned out to be smaller than I thought. But it is still so... so amazing. To live right by the water. And to watch the fish splashing around the vessel. And to sit at the table, admire the sunset, and look at the mountains.

We drank tea on the boat (there was a very, very tiny little kitchenette there) and lay down for a nap.

When we woke up, it was already getting on toward evening. We went for a walk.

At first we just walked around the pier. And then we came out onto a very beautiful embankment. The streetlights had just come on. And the sun had set, leaving a fiery trail in the sky. And there wasn’t a soul around besides us. And it seemed as if all this was in some other world, in another space. It was very beautiful, quiet, peaceful, and good….

We just kept walking and walking. The promenade ended at a beautiful four-star hotel that had been skillfully integrated into the landscape, without disturbing its beauty at all. We walked along the hotel, and the promenade turned into just a path along the sea. We walked until it was completely dark. And then we headed back.
