A truly otherworldly landscape here
San Pedro - Moon Valley - Chacabuco - Antofagasta
Chile 2023
Today is a busy day.
In the morning, a second attempt (successful this time) to visit Moon Valley.
Moon Valley (Moon Valley)

A truly otherworldly landscape here

Everything white is salt

There used to be a salt mine here. We went for a walk to that spot. This machine is all that remains from those times.

Serzhyk is photographing “stone” salt (on the left). It has a nice shape, a bit like stalactites in caves.

Let's go to the observation deck

After the Valley of the Moon, we say goodbye to Atacama and head to Antofagasta.
It is 300 km to Antofagasta, about 4.5 hours by car.
Chacabuco (Chacabuco)
On the way, we visited a very interesting place — the abandoned mining town of Chacabuco.
At the beginning of the 20th century, nitrate was mined in large quantities in this region of Chile.
Almost two hundred "nitrate" towns were created here.
However, after Germany learned how to produce nitrate chemically in the 1930s, all these towns fell into decline.
Now there is a "museum" here. Admission costs $2.5. Restoration work is even underway, but everything is very run-down.

Local theater, and nearby - a school

Many incomprehensible iron monsters

An old bathhouse; there used to be a private sauna here and even a swimming pool.
It was very hot in Chacabuco. The town is quite large; we even couldn’t walk through all of it. We got tired.
We headed to Antofagasta.
Antofagasta
In Antofagasta, we had a problem with the hotel.
In the end, we did check in.
We were lucky with the room - our room is on the 9th floor.
From the bed, you can see the ocean :)

Arrived in Antofagasta

Sunset....
Tomorrow we have a flight to southern Chile...
